Random mudane bits..
Last Jack Johnson for a while I promise.
I dare you not to fall in love with the brief guitar solo.
~*~ An interesting piece on Saudi Arabia, Lesbianism and Other Coping Mechan-'isms'
~*~ Saudi Girl was a heteronym. It was the first blog I ever came across. If at all possible.. I now think she/he is even more brilliant than ever. Hands down, best blog ever.
~*~ What do you think of this idea of modernizing Islam!?
An Excerpt: "There are five pillars of Islam and six pillars of faith that cannot be modified. That's all. The rest can be negotiated and must be modernized. Islam is doomed and the fate of the Church of England awaits it. But Anglicans didn’t leave Christianity; they just brought it up-to-date"
oh and: "Shari’a is outdated and as a matter of fact I am sure Allah understands it. Nobody is now burning witches in Great Britain but nobody said Jesus Christ doesn’t exist or anything. Islam has to be on the background and the secular laws have to be on the foreground."
Don't be shy, lets hear it..
~*~ I simply cannot pick up a book and study. I'm honestly terrified I'll fail..
~*~ There's this multicultural fashion show in my town, and they've asked me to strut my Abaya down the walk.
I should consider it.. right?
~*~ My family back in Saudi just came back from a brief vacation.
My sister really wanted to go see a live rock band, so my grandmother took her.
My mother decided that she would not go skiing because she's tired.. on the first day.
A *certain* family member ended up dancing on a table.
My uncle who couldn't wait for them to leave missed them so much that he brought a cake that said "DAMNIT ya'll are back" when they came home.
How can I not miss those crazy fools?
It's my uncle's Milka this Friday... I wish I could be there.

Oh. You're new post is PACKED. *smiles* I'll attack it as soon as I get home - I just wanted to be the first to comment =P
Your uncle is getting milked? I don't even wanna know what that is :S
Leeno,
First two posts are great, but what the hell is up with the third one? Clealy the site owner and the woman asking him have no idea about what Islam is all about, and I don't know what their belif System is but them wanting their religion to emulate another one? why not follow the one that is being emulated and that it? Then she says she left Islam after an intense discussion with her husband, what the hell? nobody does soemthing like that without alot and alot of soul searching.
Now about the site owner I don't know who translated the Holy Quran for him but they did a screwed up job of it, and whoever thought him history is wacked not to mention that he too is very fond of another religion. Seeing people like this is like seeing another form of extermism.
Sedna: Your home must be very far heh..
Dotsson: OK. I never know how to reply to your comments.
Talal: I don't think they're emulating per se. Just stating examples perhaps? History is the best teacher.
Personally, I wouldn't prescribe to their school of thought... My views are more conservative, but I think living in Saudi we see one side of our religion and only one.. and it's almost inherent to think that those who adopt a different form are on the fast track to purgatory.
It's important to be educated about what's out there. In the end who's to say who is in the "wrong" and who is in the "right".. what do you think?
No matter what sect.. Islam is a religion of tolerance. At least it once was.
oh and P.S-- I'm avoiding giving a straight personal opinion on the woman's comments for the sake of the debate.. so no one draw conclusions.
A few interesting items. Lesbianism and Saudi women, I think I will leave that one allow.
I agree with Talal. She doesnt have a clue. Reading her is like reading a neo-con site. There can be reform in Islam, but she sounds like Irshad Manjani, she wants to completely change and dilute the religion, not reform it.
I left Christianity and became a Muslim, Alhamdulillah, because I liked what Islam had to offer, as a religion. I did so before I knew any Muslims. It seems to me that all too often these types of people mistake Islam and Muslims. Muslims are not always a good representation of Islam. Had I made a choice on religion based on the actions of its followers, Islam wouldnt have been the one I would have chose.
But I realise Islam is the best religion out there and is beautiful, despite everything else. Reform is needed, but lets not throw the child out with the bathwater, so to speak.
raf*: I didn't know that. I didn't even explore the site, I just stumbled upon this woman's amusing letter. Now I get her comment on people like him eradicating..
heh.. she took her to some local band playing at hard rock.. nothing too wild.
Abu Sinan: I don't know about reform. I was drilled Islam the way it is and that any change is forbidden. That's just me..
Now when you say reform.. how would one go about that?
It's dangerous ground as each person loosens religion to their comfort calling it reform..
It was a very long flight! I can't ski I could have broken something.
We wish you were here with us too, it isn't the same without you.
Yeah, good point Leeno. I think that is one of the main weaknesses, but at the same time, one of the main strengths of Islam, no central leader.
How to enact reform? Good question. As to change being forbidden, I agree. But change what? People like this lady want to change fundamentals of Islam, and I am not in favour of that.
What can be done is too look at texts, hadiths and other things to see if Islamic principles cannot be better applied to the modern world.
The people who say "change" is haraam or those same people who say Ijtihad was closed 500 years ago so they rely on scholarship that was done hundreds of years before we had cars, planes, movies and the like.
To to keep the fundamentals, but apply them to the modern world based on modern choices.
Abu Sinan:
Needless to say it's changing subtely without official declarations... but I'm still iffy..
7:
Tislam.
Lets hope that 90% translates into a 90% on the test eh?
This is chronic heh.

Congrats for your auncle,, inshala you'll be there for the wedding girl ;)
uncle* :S
LOL i totally forgot that I promised to comment.. eh 2 days ago :P
- Interesting links, the first one was entertaining "Of course I am generalising scandalously" lol i'm glad she knows :) But I don't understand why people write about other cultures like that. I mean it's ok to explore other cultures and share your findings, but you're meant to do it in an unbiased way. Don't these people know anything about anthropology? :P
- Saudi girl is not a girl?! Haha, I've never visited the blog before, but that's one hell of a cool idea :)
- Modernizing Islam...I agree with Talal and Abu Sinan.
- You won't fail :) YOU'RE GONNA KICK-ASS GIRL!!! AWOOHOO *does little dance which involved a lot of kicking and jumping* GO LEENOOOOO
